Learning to build together: lessons from LEGO Serious Play

Learning to build – lessons from lego serious play Each person comes with their own set of personality traits and experiences, which naturally shapes how each one of us understands the same tasks or ideas. In a team setting, this becomes a real strength — but only when these differences are recognized and embraced.

Even strong teams continuously refine how they communicate and collaborate by adopting more engaging team-building approaches and ensuring that information is shared clearly and effectively, both internally and with clients. Bringing together people from different fields and combining their expertise lies at the heart of project management yet this diversity comes with its own challenges. One of them - differing ways of thinking.

Different points of view be illustrated through a simple metaphor: if several people are given six LEGO bricks and asked to build a duck, each model will likely look different. Although the materials are identical, the outcomes vary because even a small number of elements can create countless combinations. Similarly, in teamwork, value lies not only in the final result but also in the collaborative process itself — how ideas are discussed, how diverse perspectives are considered, and how decisions are reached collectively.

UAB “Teisa” places strong emphasis on both individual and team development. Therefore, this spring, as new colleagues joined the company, the “LEGO Serious Play” methodology was introduced as part of a team-building session — a hands-on approach that encourages participants to express ideas creatively, “think with their hands,” and communicate through LEGO models. This format promotes active engagement, ensures equal participation, and creates space for discussion and reflection. It is particularly valuable in a project management environment, where different competencies must come together to achieve a shared goal.

During the session, participants created models based on different situations, personal experiences and self-reflection, which were later combined and positioned into a shared structure which turned into a visual map of the company – exposing connections and dependencies within the team. Here, the six-brick metaphor gained even greater meaning: while each team member can develop different solutions individually, it is through discussion and collaboration that these ideas are refined, connected, and strengthened.

Different perspectives and experiences are not challenges in themselves; they become strengths when they are heard, understood, and meaningfully connected. Ultimately, effective communication is a cornerstone of successful organizational performance. Clear internal dialogue strengthens understanding of client needs and enables teams to respond to change quickly and effectively. This way organizations achieve not only higher-quality results, but also a more transparent, predictable, and collaborative way of working that supports sustainable success.
